Tips for Painting Furniture

Photo taken from: thisyounghouse blog

Just perusing some of my favorite blogs on the right way to paint furniture (I've taken on this task several times, forgoing any advise, only to be terribly disappointed with the end result and unnecessarily wasting time and money. . .)

I'm working on re-doing Jordyn's bedroom (see post below re: the funky, colorful, hip 8 year old girlie room I am currently tackling)

Here's the readers digest version. . .

1. If it needs to be sanded, use 100 grit sand paper, lightly sanding all over.
2. Apply an oil based primer with a roller or brush (avoid foam rollers!) Note: it may look thin in some areas, but as long as the entire piece is covered, you should be good.
3. Using a clean paintbrush (most desirable,) or roller, apply two coats of a latex paint, letting the first coat dry completely before applying the second.
4. Brush on two thin coats of water based poly urethane (This Young House recommends Minwax Water-Based Polycrylic Protective Finish in “Clear Gloss”) Note: Make sure the coats are THIN! Let the first dry completely before applying the second.
5. Wait at least 48 hours before you place something on top of/sit on/etc. your newly painted furniture

Wish me luck! Before and After photos to follow!
